Protocol of measures for air travel

The European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) and the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) have launched a Protocol of Measures to ensure the safety and health of air travelers and aviation personnel.

The new guidance includes factors that are already being adopted: physical distancing, use of masks and frequent hand hygiene. Health safety is given paramount importance in the protocol at every stage of the end-to-end journey.

It analyzes each phase of the passenger's journey and specifies the actions to be taken before arriving at the airport, at the departure terminal, at boarding, in flight, in transit and on arrival.

"Ensuring health safety is a critical factor in the resumption of commercial air travel," said EASA Executive Director Patrick Ky, who added that "this is the beginning, rather than the end, of a process to make air travel as safe as possible from a health perspective. The next task is for airlines and airport operators to adapt the guidelines to their individual facilities and operations."

Passengers

The guidance also adds that passengers should be responsible. For example, passengers who have symptoms consistent with COVID-19 or who know they have been in contact with a COVID-19 case should not arrive at the airport or should postpone their travel to protect fellow passengers.
In addition, passengers will be asked to provide contact information to enable analysis if someone after a flight tests positive for COVID-19.

Relatives and acquaintances of travelers who are going to say goodbye should do so before entering the terminal building, except in special defined cases.

Regarding aircraft operators and airport operators, it is noted that they should work to ensure social distancing whenever possible, especially during check-in, security screening, pre-boarding and boarding. When physical distancing is not possible, operators should implement additional measures to reduce risk.

In the airplane, the guidelines offer some flexibility due to limited space. However, passengers should keep their distance whenever possible.

These recommended measures will be updated periodically according to changes in the development of the pandemic, as well as diagnostic or preventive measures.
