The European Union will maintain its border closure

The European Commission on Friday called for an extension of the closure of the European Union's external border until June 15 to contain the spread of the virus. Brussels is calling on the Member States to take joint action to agree on the extension of this deadline, as this is a matter for them to manage.

On March 16, entries to space were blocked, allowing only strictly necessary travel, such as the repatriation of European citizens in foreign countries.

The closure of internal borders of some countries such as Spain or France was not well seen by the Community Executive. However, this new closure has been optimistically proposed and now advocates a gradual and measured withdrawal of restrictions.

Despite the fact that some countries have launched the first phase to reduce containment, the current health situation remains "fragile", so Brussels believes that these restrictions at the external border are fair and necessary to reduce the risk and prevent the spread of the virus through the European Union due to travel.

However, Brussels points out that the lifting of travel restrictions should be progressive. They urge member countries to reopen internal borders gradually as soon as the health situation permits. The aim is to reduce the risk as much as possible to allow movement between EU countries.
